2015.11.27 【Report】Workshop for “Science of Broadening Participation of Women in Science and Education Fields and the Workforce” was held on November 16th

On November 16th, the workshop for “Science of Broadening Participation of Women in Science and Education Fields and the Workforce” was held at the Ito Guest House on Ito Campus.


As guest speakers, we have invited Dr. Kellina Craig-Henderson, Deputy Assistant Director of the Social, Behavioral and Economic Science Directorate of the National Science Foundation, Professor Yuka Ohno and Professor Yukiko Abe from the Economics Department at Hokkaido University, Professor Mariko Nishikitani from the Institute Decision Science for Sustainable Society at Kyushu University, and Professor Akiko Yamashita from the Department of Human Sciences at Kyushu University. Based on different point of view such as psychology, economics, and public health, they have examined women’s participation, gave lectures, and had a panel discussion.


Dr. Craig-Henderson gave a lecture on NSF’s activity, women’s participation in the STEM area (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics), and science of broadening participation. Dr. Ohno lectured on economic analysis of broadening participation and the perspective to view gender equality as an economic opportunity. Professor Nishikitani gave a lecture on the relationship between unwilling employment status and health among highly educated women.


The panel discussion was facilitated by Professor Aoki, the Director of the Office for Promotion of Gender Equality at Kyushu University, and the guest speakers gave opinions on how their discipline contribute to gender equality and broadening participation, and how their research in gender equality and inclusion has been beneficial to their career. 


This workshop was joined not only by Kyushu University students, faculty member and staff, but also by many extramural participants including participants from Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University, Saga University, Fukuoka Women’s University, and American Consulate in Fukuoka. With the help of simultaneous translation, we had an active discussion both in English and in Japanese.  


Participants asked questions on “effective training method for women’s participation”, “research funds for women”, and “ways to find a mentor”. It was an informative workshop and the participants commented that they had noticed their own biases and learned from the in-depth lectures.


The Office for Promotion of Gender Equality will hold more workshops and seminars in the future. We look forward to your participation.
